A settlement may be on the cards for a group of music publishers’ copyright infringement lawsuit against X, formerly Twitter.

The US-based NMPA sued Twitter (as it was then) in June 2023, seeking more than $250m in damages for infringements of around 1,700 songs.

After rebranding, X filed a motion asking for the lawsuit to be dismissed that August, and while some elements of the case were thrown out, it moved forward in March 2024.

Now an update. Law360 reported that the publishers and X have filed a joint motion requesting a pause in proceedings for 90 days to “facilitate an orderly and negotiated resolution” to the case.

The plaintiffs are a long list of publishers including all three majors, BMG, Downtown Music Publishing, Hipgnosis Songs Group, Kobalt, Peermusic, Reservoir Media and more.
